Preventing Work Place Burn Injuries

When you think of living and working in beautiful Huntington Beach, one of the last thing to come to mind are burn injuries. The work place is a major source of burn injuries no matter what city you live in. What is a good way to go about preventing work place burn injuries?

Many people in Huntington Beach and other cities such as Venice Beach, have experienced or will experience work place burn injuries. It is not only to the benefit of employers to seek better ways in preventing work place burn injuries, but the employees¢ benefit by raising such standards of burn safety.

Scalding by steam in the work place is one of the leading causes of steam injuries.
In publication 2004-146 of the National Institute for Public Safety and Health (NIOSH), it is stated that the average burn injuries from scalding results in a 5 day of work. The economic costs to the employers and employees can be staggering.

Steam processes in industrial plants are a major source of steam injuries. Preventing work place burn injuries is to everyone¢s best interest. In the past new steam lines were covered with an insulative hard lagging and mineral wool. When repairs are needed parts of the insulation is removed. The costs to replace the repaired sections can be prohibitive so they are often left uncovered. In not replacing these sections the possibilities of a burn accident is greatly increased.

Another source for major burns caused by hot steam are the flexible hoses or lines that are connected to the moving parts of machinery. These are typically not covered with insulation material or hard lagging as this material is not flexible. Employees working close by to these hoses are in danger of possible steam burns or scalding.

However, new advancements in thermal protection technologies have been developed. There are now new closed cell silicone sponge rubber materials that can be used to wrap the hot process lines. These new materials are very flexible and not stiff and rigid like the hard lagging and mineral wool. Maintenance personnel can easily make installation and repairs. The closed cell silicone sponge can be used to cover a variety of potential burn surfaces because of its flexibility. It is also very cost effective thereby making the likelihood of exposed process lines low.
