Rollover Accident and Fire Back Up 1-5 For 20 Miles

July 24 (Patrice Garby)

A rollover crash involving a meat truck, backed up southbound Interstate 5 early Thursday. Reportedly a Vons grocery truck overturned on I-5 and burst into flames in a remote area of the Marine Base in Camp Pendleton.

The flames touched off a 4-acre brush fire and immediately shut down all southbound lanes on the freeway.

California Highway Patrol Officer Larry Landeros, reportedly said that the driver was seriously injured and was rescued from the wreckage. The damage to the truck was severe.

Witnesses reported that they had seen the truck flip over several times. Cause of the accident was not immediately known and the name of the driver not yet released.
The area along the center divider and the left lane of southbound I-5 was later re-opened around 6:12 am.
