October 18, 2009 - According to reports several people sustained burns after what Orange County Fire Department believes was a vehicle malfunction. According to Orange County Fire Department Capt. Greg McKeown the incident occurred on the southbound lanes of the I-5 Freeway in Irvine in the vicinity of Culver Drive. At approximately 10:33 a call was received that 18 firefighters, 3 fire engines and 2 paramedics responded to.
The incident appears to show that there was a malfunction upon the initial investigation, the malfunction was with the rear tire and there might have been a gasoline leak. The vehicle caught fire and the fire spread quickly.
By the time the driver was able to pull over on the side of the southbound lanes of the freeway flames were beginning to enter the inside of the vehicle. The driver exited the vehicle without being injured, the other passengers, another adult, a three year old child, and a six year old child sustained a combination of first and second degree burns.
According to Capt. McKeown the burn injured victims were transported to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana for treatment and the investigation is ongoing. Their identities or hometowns have not been released.
