South Los Angeles DUI Crash Ends In Fiery Death

September 4, 2011-According to burn injury reports, the driver of a smart car swerved on the roadway crashing into a disabled vehicle that resulted in the death of one person and injuries to two other people. According to the California Highway Patrol the deadly accident occurred on the 110 Freeway at approximately 2:40 a.m. in South Los Angeles.

California Highway Patrol officials an 18 year old was driving a Smart Car and swerved off of the side of the road hitting a 1921 Chevy Monte Carlo that was disabled on the shoulder. The collision occurred due to a driver slowing in front of the Smart Car driver, who was later arrested for driving under the influence.

The driver of the Smart Car then swerved across the solid white line and drove onto the shoulder hitting the back Monte Carlo, causing the three occupants that were standing outside of the car to be struck by the vehicle. Upon impact between the Smart Car and the 1971 Chevy Monte Carlo, they both burst into flames. One of the men standing outside of the disabled vehicle, a 44 year old man from Paramount was trapped beneath the Monte Carlo and burnt to death, according to officials.

The two other men standing outside of the disabled vehicle were injured, with a 47 year old man being critically injured and transported from the crash by paramedics to USC Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, with a broken pelvis, and third degree burns to his face and arms. The third man, a 19 year old from Compton was transported to California Hospital Medical Center, with complaints of pain in both legs.

According to the California Highway Patrol the Man Burned to Death in South Los Angeles 110 Freeway DUI Crash, was trapped and that is why he could not escape the flames, but the 18 year old Smart Car driver apparently only sustained abrasions to his shoulders from the vehicles seatbelts, but declined to be transported to the hospital for treatment. He was arrested at the scene and charged with suspicion of driving under the influence and second degree murder.

California Highway Patrol officers booked the driver at the LAPD Parker Center.
